An island with that is a favorite with tourists and one of the most cosmopolitan islands of the Aegean, Skiathos, the homeland of the famous litterateur Alexandros Papadiamanti, it offers rich vegetation and beautiful beaches. Here the pine trees reach all the way to the beach, whereas along the shores of the southern district of the island there are many modern accommodation establishments as well as beautiful villages. At the end of the road westwards, you will find Koukounaries, an internationally known beach for its smooth golden sand. The beaches of the northern district can be reached by boat. There you will find the Castle, a quiet and medieval town that was the capital of the island till 1829. The main town and the harbor of Skiathos and even though it is a large tourist it still has not lost it color or charm.
