The Temple of Aphaea
One of the best preserved Doric temples One of the best preserved Doric temples, dating from the beginning of the 5th century B.C., built of local "poros" stone, and serving as a model for the construction of the Parthenon and other temples in Greece, Asia Minor and Southern Italy. Its pedimental sculptures are the pride of Munich's Glyptothek. The Aphae Temple which was built at the end of the 6th century is the most beautiful Doric styled temple to be found in Greece. In 1811 the pediments were discovered by two art loving companies one German one English. These pediments were those of battles scenes between the Greeks and Trojans and the statue of Athena is in the centre. All seventeen of these pediments were sent to Germany where they were sold to the King of Barvaria, Ludavic the First for 120.000 gold marks. The pediments were reconstructed by Thorvalatsen and the German Vagnar they can be seen in the museum in Munich today. The archaeologists believe these pediments were made by the Aeginean sculptor Ornata.
